Announcement: Artificial intelligence is seen by many as a promise of salvation for humanity – efficient, objective, tireless. But what if this future technology conceals authoritarian fantasies of power?
Since Trump’s second term, the United States has witnessed a profound hollowing out of the rule of law – with unprecedented levels of repression and state abuse of power. At the forefront: Silicon Valley tech CEOs. Silicon Valley provides not only the technology but also the ideology: a world in which corporate profit logics, ruthless social Darwinism, and a turn toward anti-democratic political models are in some cases openly endorsed. Long-nurtured anti-feminist ideologies from anonymous online forums of the “manosphere” and “tech bros” also play a central role and have begun to shape politics.
Rainer Mühlhoff’s new book examines the dangerous alliance between tech ideologies and right-wing politics – and asks: What role does AI play in this development? Why do debates about superintelligence and machine ethics obscure the real social and political consequences of the AI industry? Why does the public allow itself to be distracted by speculations about salvation or extinction through AI from the very real damages caused by AI in the present? And how can we recognize anti-democratic and fascist tendencies in these developments at an early stage – also in Europe?
Following a short introduction, author Rainer Mühlhoff, Aline Blankertz, and a member of the çapulcu editorial collective will discuss artificial intelligence, authoritarianism, and resistance in the digital age, moderated by Carolin Wiedemann. An interactive exhibition and video installation by the feminist-activist Rainbow-Pill Collective on the manosphere and its entanglement with the tech elites will accompany the evening in the Red Salon.
